Relevance and Importance

The basis of a search engine, such as Google, is to provide highly relevant results to the searcher as quickly as possible. This alone is what has driven Google from a simple search box on a web page to an Internet icon that is used in everyday conversations. How many times a day do you hear someone say, "just Google it"? Since Google first appeared in 1997, they have retained the simplicity of an Internet search box while expanding into other areas of new business. So, how does Google determine what results will be displayed to the searcher so quickly? Google has a complex and ever changing algorithm that they use to determine the relevance of a particular website. The criteria of this algorithm are not released to anyone outside of Google, so it could be described as a "secret sauce". As the Google robot (GoogleBot) crawls the Internet it evaluates the web pages it finds and rates them according to their relevance and importance. With testing and using the limited information that is released from Google, people have been able to come up with some standard things that you must do to rank in the search engine result pages (SERP's). However, as mentioned earlier, the algorithm is changed periodically. In the end, it's pretty well accepted that to reach higher rankings in the SERP's you must provide Google relevant information about the topic of your web pages, and show them that your pages are important to other people by obtaining backlinks to your site. Backlinks are links coming from another web page to yours. The more quality backlinks you get, from similar themed sites, the better your rankings will be. So, when you are creating content on your web pages make sure that you highlight your targeted keywords and that what you write is highly relevant to the web page.
