Making Joomla Search Engine Friendly
By Steve Strait
Joomla is one of the most popular Content Management Systems (CMS) available today. It is an easy to setup and use software package that allows even the most non-technical person to contribute content to your website. This is done through a word processor type of interface that is built into the software. The content is contained in a database, and Joomla dynamically creates the web page on demand. One of the problems with the way Joomla creates the web pages dynamically is that they contain characters that the search engine spiders can’t read, or at least can’t read well. This is not confined to Joomla, as all CMS and Blog software programs do the same thing. To get a better idea of the problem with dynamic URL’s, check out my previous post here. So, how do you make Joomla change the URL’s so that the search engines can properly index your site? Well it’s pretty easy actually, assuming you are running Apache web server. There is an Apache module that allows you to rewrite the URL’s. Like everything else in Joomla, they make setting this up pretty easy. If you are hosting your websites on a Linux server running Apache, then odds are good that you have access to the “mod_rewrite” module already. So, simply go to your Joomla Administration site and login. In the Global Configuration section, there is small area called SEO Settings with 3 options to choose from. For reference, view the picture below. On the second option, notice the warning triangle to the right side of it. This gives an indication of what needs to be done. Please do not follow Joomla’s suggestion blindly, which is to rename the provided htaccess.txt file to .htaccess. If you already have some redirects or something similar setup in your existing .htaccess file, then you will clobber it this way. The best way is to copy the contents of the provided htaccess.txt file at the bottom of your existing .htaccess. Then go through it manually and remove any duplication. If you setup Search Engine Friendly URL’s and fail to add this htaccess.txt file then your URL’s will be broken completely and that will definitely not help you with the search engines. In my opinion, Joomla is a wonderful software package and I am using it on many websites of my own and for my clients. Fortunately they make setting up SEF URL’s pretty easy. Just like everything else in Joomla. |
