Does Your Website Use Dynamic URL's?
By Steve Strait
Many of the popular blog or content management system software packages are setup to use dynamic URL's by default. This seems logical, as these programs actually create the content dynamically when a user goes to your site or clicks on a link. This is a stark change from the "old" days when people just used static HTML pages to display their content. Dynamic URL's are those long ones that you see on websites that contain what appears to be random letters and "?" type characters. This is a vast difference from the static pages that once dominated the Internet, with file names such as webpage.html. The problem with dynamic URL's is that some search engines stop reading the URL once it reaches a "?" in the file name. This may result in your web page not being indexed by the search engine and included in its index. If you're running a business and have your sales pages or lead generation pages as dynamic URL's, you may not be getting the traffic that you want. This is why most of these types of pages are still the good old-fashioned static HTML pages. The good news is that most of these popular software programs, such as Wordpress or Joomla, offer a way to create "Search Engine Friendly" URL's. For example, in Wordpress, you can select how you want the URL's to be displayed from four common settings, or you can create your own structure for your blog. By using search engine friendly URL's, you will have a much better chance of getting all of your pages indexed by the search engines. There are quite a few plugins for these types of software packages that will provide an easy way to optimize your site for search engines. So, if you are still using dynamic links then you should check into some these. Who knows, your rankings in the search engines may improve as well.
